Whose Voice is in Your Head?
I still apply principles today that were first introduced to me in my teens by my friend Tyrone. Amazingly, he understood things at 14 years of age that I am still exploring, rigorously, every day. Years later, in my 20s, when I was working as a welder, an older guy named Dave, who came from Jamaica, demonstrated Zen-like work habits that changed my life. While I thrashed about in the metal shop, trying to get as much done as I could, ultimately going home each evening covered in grease, cuts and bruises, Dave took his time – first sweeping the area so that all parts would be level; then laying out, within arms reach, all the tools he would need; and, finally, placing a towel on his belt so he could wipe his hands any time he touched the greasy steel. As a result, Dave went home each night in very different condition than I did.
Tyrone and Dave remain two of the central voices in my head even after all these years. I would be a very different person without their influence.
