Two Authors. One Mind.

The authors circa 1984

People often ask us how we wrote The Backstage Man together – how two authors could write a single novel. The amazing thing to me is how easy and seamless it actually was. So much so that it never occurred to me that we were doing something unusual or challenging. On the contrary, I always loved having the help, the camaraderie, the shared experience of this extraordinary 35-year journey. For all of you who have inquired, the answer is that we often wrote the way musicians jam. I would begin a paragraph, Rob would nudge me off the chair with excitement so that he could modify a phrase or inject some additional thoughts or color. I would take the seat back, maybe modify one of his phrases, and pick up from there. It was absolutely organic. Sometimes we would talk through an obstacle — or a possibility — and clarify our vision before ploughing forward. We kept each other honest. Now, the result of this grand collaboration is there for all to read. And I hope you all will. Because I am so deeply proud and amazed at what we have done.
